March 8 was celebrated not to glorify the Wonderful Ladies, but to glorify revolutionary women. It was the day of women who strived for equal rights with men.
International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark. International Women’s Day has been celebrated everywhere since March 8, after women in Austria, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia celebrated their day on March 8, 1914.
Over time, the political part of the holiday has been forgotten, leaving only the need to honor women in the spring for their beauty, tenderness and infinite love.
At all times in many nations, women have been considered a “miracle and a gift”, a “symbol of life and happiness”, and in almost all national calendars there is a day dedicated to women.
In Spain, Women’s Day is considered the day of remembrance of St. Ageda, the patron saint of women. It is celebrated on February 5 and is considered a unique “mother day”. Interesting ways of celebrating the “feminine beginning” of the world exist in Hindu countries. In the foreground here is not the image of a specific woman, but the deified image of an ancestor.
International Women’s Day is not country, group, nor organization specific. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” So make International Women’s Day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women.
